Apex Acoustics conducted a transportation noise analysis for a proposed two-story single-family residence on a 0.54-acre lot in Howard County, Maryland.
Located less than 100 feet east of Centennial Lane, the property required evaluation of roadway traffic noise to guide the placement of the residence and outdoor activity areas relative to Howard County’s 65 dBA criterion.
Apex evaluated future traffic noise exposure across the property, identified suitable locations for residential development, and recommended practical building-envelope and site-planning measures to control traffic noise.
Apex combined 24-hour field sound monitoring with three-dimensional traffic noise modeling using FHWA Traffic Noise Model methodology within CadnaA. Predicted and measured peak-hour sound levels differed by just 1.7 dB, meeting the study’s ±3 dB validation criterion.
Apex modeled 2043 traffic conditions assuming 2% annual traffic growth to establish the projected 65 dBA noise contour across the property. The assessment also evaluated potential building-envelope improvements and landscaping measures for additional noise control.

Modeling indicated that the western portion of the property exceeded 65 dBA, while the remainder of the site was below that level.
The predicted 65 dBA contour crossed the property approximately 53 feet from the Centennial Lane right-of-way. Apex recommended locating the residence and outdoor activity areas in the eastern portion of the property, outside the contour.
Additional recommendations included upgraded windows, fully gasketed solid-core exterior doors, and evergreen plantings as supplemental noise-control measures.
The study provided a mapped, technically supported basis for siting the residence and incorporating appropriate acoustical measures into its design.
