Apex Acoustics conducted a transportation noise analysis for a proposed multifamily residential development on a 3.01-acre parcel in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
The property was approximately 400 feet from MD 100, 570 feet from MD 295, and two miles from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, creating potential exposure to elevated roadway and aircraft noise.
The analysis evaluated how the development could meet applicable exterior and interior noise criteria, including county requirements and HUD noise policy. Apex characterized existing acoustic conditions, predicted future transportation noise exposure, and identified where building-envelope improvements would be needed.
Apex conducted 24-hour sound measurements to characterize existing environmental noise conditions.
A three-dimensional CadnaA model was then developed incorporating topography, ground conditions, buildings and roadway characteristics. The model was validated against measured data, then used to predict future noise levels based on projected 2036 traffic volumes for MD 295, MD 100, Wright Road, and associated ramps.
The analysis evaluated noise exposure at the proposed development and determined the building-envelope performance needed to meet applicable interior noise criteria.

The analysis provided the project team with the acoustical information needed to address Anne Arundel County zoning requirements and HUD noise policy.
Where enhanced sound isolation was needed, Apex recommended building-envelope improvements, including upgraded windows, acoustically rated exterior wall assemblies, and sealed, acoustically rated exterior doors.
The assessment translated predicted transportation noise exposure into specific building-envelope recommendations for incorporation into the development’s design.
